Wreaths Across America Comes to Ellsworth
Ellsworth – The City of Ellsworth and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department will host the first ceremony to kick off the 2018 Wreaths Across America journey to Arlington National Cemetery. The convoy of trucks will arrive at the Maine Coast Mall at 9:00 a.m. on December 9th.
Wreaths Across America started as a simple gesture of thanks, that over the last 10 years, has grown into a national movement of dedicated volunteers and communities coming together to not only remember the nation’s fallen and honor their service, but to teach the next generation about the sacrifices made for us to live freely. In 2017 more than 1.5 million wreaths were placed at headstones at 1,422 participating cemeteries around the country. It all begins with the ceremony here in Ellsworth. Senator Susan Collin will be the guest speaker.
The public can show their support by attending or standing by the convoy route that will take trucks along Route 1 from Harrington to Ellsworth and then the length of High Street on their way out of the city. Businesses are encouraged to show their support by posting messages on their signs. This is a free community event. Families are welcomed to show their support and partake with the Vet Center, Carriage rides, kids crafts and light refreshments.
Veterans who are in local nursing homes and want to attend but need transportation can call Darlings Chevrolet at 667-2512 by December 5th.
