Wallace Events Wins Top Drawer Honor

The Board of Directors of the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the Top Drawer honoree for 2017 is Wallace Events of Ellsworth. Entering their 20th year of providing rentals, sound, lighting and event technology, this Ellsworth company is truly ‘homegrown’.

Brian Spencer grew up in Ellsworth. After working for over ten years in the rental business including Long Island NY and Taylor Rental in Brewer Maine, in 1998 he decided to go out on his own and started Eastern Events Inc.  That year Eastern Events purchased Wallace Tent and Awning in Trenton. Brian entered the field with a leased 4000 square foot building and 2 full time employees.  The first seven years of the business was ‘new business survival mode’ with insane 100 hour work weeks, help from multiple family members who still had their own careers Monday thru Friday, while keeping a focus on the highest quality service.

By 2006 Wallace Tent and Party Rental had outgrown their location and purchased a new lot in Ellsworth’s Commerce Park. The new location and 10,000 square foot building seemed gigantic at first. However this space was quickly used up as the business continued to grow even through a financial recession.

In 2010 Brian’s nephew and Wallace Employee since childhood, Jake Taylor, became Brian’s business partner and Vice President of Wallace Tent and Party Rentals.  Together they were able to expand the company from a regional one to a state wide presence, including purchasing a second Show Room in Rockland Maine in 2011.  This provided easier service for the mid-coast and southern Maine customers, who were now becoming a large part of Wallace’s business.

The expansion in business necessitated even more building space, Wallace purchased two more lots from the City of Ellsworth, and built another 17,000 sq. ft. building and large parking lots.

In 2015 Wallace purchased a sound and lighting company.  With this addition to what they already offered, they rebranded to Wallace Events.  The company can not only provide the rentals for an event, they can ‘produce’ the event, from chairs and tables to technology for lighting, sound, special effects and more. Each year they bring the cutting edge to Maine with new concepts in tents, flooring and technology, making them a leader statewide in the event business.

Brian, Jake and their staff know that their success came from the local community that they grew up in and they in turn have continually given back.  There probably aren’t too many events, weddings, large parties that they haven’t touched in some way.  From the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Gala’s and Poinsettia Balls, to the oldest Antique show in the Country, now under a tent, College Graduations, to family weddings along the coast.  Wallace has been there providing exceptional customer service.  Wallace Events has also have given away their services to many area nonprofits for their fundraisers.  Brian and Jake understand that  it takes many hands in a community.

Presently Wallace employs 22 full time employees in Ellsworth and Rockland, many additional part time employees and 75 seasonal workers. Brian and Jake are proud of not only their community participation but as creators of good paying jobs in the area. 2017 will see an additional 12,000 sq. feet of building space, several more full time positions and continued expansion into the far corners of Maine.

Wallace Events currently does over 20 times more business than it did 20 years ago in 1998, but their main focus has always been offering premier customer service, by creating quality jobs that support local families and businesses. Brian said “Winning the Top Drawer Award is very humbling and gratifying when there are so many deserving businesses in the area. I feel this award belongs to the staff, and the community we all live and work in.  They are the engine behind our success”
