New Podcast Series Launches to Explore Health and Wellness on MDI

BAR HARBOR—Mount Desert Island Hospital announced this week the launch of a new podcast series, “Island Health” that will explore health and wellness in the MDI region. The new podcast series offers conversational, informative discussions with local health and wellness professionals.

In season one, we join hosts Oka Hutchins and Justin Starbird as they delve into a variety of health and wellness topics. “We really wanted to dig into the nuts and bolts of health care here on MDI,” said Hutchins, communications manager for MDI Hospital. “The idea for Island Health began with us wanting to explore what services are available, how certain specialties work, and how our community organizations come together to support health and wellness here.”

The podcast explores everything from unique medical specialties and innovative community partnerships to the challenges of providing health care in a rural coastal environment. Episode one feature a conversation with Dr. Mark Kandutsch on Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy, a regenerative therapy technique that uses patients’ own platelets to heal torn joints and ligaments. In episode two, we hear from Dr. Kandutsch and PRP patient Robin Clarke, a marathon runner who received PRP treatment on her knee in 2016. Because of PRP, Clarke was able to avoid surgery and ran a 5K days after her procedure. Returning to normal activity this quickly is not typical, but neither is Clarke, who went on to win the 5K.

Episode three features a discussion with board-certified music therapist Melissa Violette, who uses her 26 years’ experience in the field to help participants process grief and loss, cope with anger, manage stress and build self-esteem and self-awareness through music. Episode four, set to air later this month, will feature a newly established Cancer Patient Navigator Program made possible through a grant from the Maine Cancer Foundation that offers patients and their families an extra layer of support as they move through the healthcare system.

The first three episodes of “Island Health” are available now, and new episodes will be released each month. For more information, visit
