The county seat for Hancock County, Ellsworth is one of the most exciting small cities in Maine and one of the safest in the country. Packed with history, it has an inviting, easily walked downtown filled with unique stores, food venues, and its art deco landmark, the Grand Theatre. While the city has a population of less than 7,000, its energy and prosperity is deep. That's due in part to its neighboring Bar Harbor region. Nearby Acadia National Park attracts millions of visitors each year, and Ellsworth is the gateway. Many Ellsworth residents first fell in love with the area through a visit to Acadia.   Yet Ellsworth has a beauty and charm all its own. Located along the Union River, its history as a lumber port and shipbuilding center can still be seen in its many beautiful buildings. One home in particular, the Woodlawn Museum, preserves life in 19th century Maine for thousands of visitors each year. Ellsworth is also home to a lovely wildlife sanctuary called Birdsacre located amidst a telephone museum, quiet trails, and picnicking spots along the Union River and Ellsworth Falls.   Ellsworth is conveniently located near the many educational, healthcare, and shopping resources of the Bangor region. But Ellsworth residents need not travel even the 30 miles to Bangor for any of life's necessities. Ellsworth enjoys its own hospital, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, a public marina, two golf courses, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, and a full suite of professional and retail services, from locally owned gems to national chains. The Hancock County Higher Education Center allows you to choose from 39 University of Maine and Eastern Maine Community College programs, from the associate level up to the graduate level, without leaving your hometown.   From near or far, Ellsworth offers a distinctive lifestyle. For those interested in theater, Ellsworth's Grand Theatre provides entertainment more than 330 days a year. Join one of Ellsworth's theater or choral groups for both adults and children. Locals or tourists can appreciate the neighboring town of Trenton and enjoy their Seacoast Fun Park, take in the Lumberman's Show, or eat a fresh steamed lobster at one of the "lobster pounds" on Route 1A.
