OCTOBER 11— STONINGTON— Opera House Arts (OHA) is thrilled to partner with fellow Deer Isle organizations in hosting the 5th annual Stonington Spooktacular with events scheduled for the whole family in celebration of Halloween on Saturday, October 26, beginning at 9am.
The day kicks off at 9am with festive pumpkin carving, stories, crafts and healthy treats to eat compliments of Parents Are Leaders (PALs) at the Island Community Center on School Street in Stonington.
The Trick-or-Treat parade begins at 10am, departing the Island Community Center for Pink Street towards Main Street in downtown Stonington, where the following local businesses (signaled by Halloween flags made by the Deer Isle-Stonington After School Program) will offer free candy to parade participants: Camden National Bank, Harbor View Store, Stonington Public Library, Boyce’s Motel, Inn on the Harbor, Harbor Café, Island Agency, Island Fishing Gear (will have allergy-free treat), Suzy Scissor Shack, Stonington Post Office (until close at 11 AM), The Dry Dock, Rockbound Rebekah’s (Oddfellows Hall), and the Reach Performing Arts Center (location TBD).
At 10:30am, spirited festivities continue at the historic Stonington Opera House. With the theater lobby now decorated for the spooky holiday, Opera House Arts welcomes community members to participate in family-friendly Halloween activities, including more craft-making, a kids’ costume show on the Opera House stage, and playful theater games led by OHA Education Associate Joshua McCarey.
At 11am, Opera House Arts will show a free screening of Dreamworks’ Halloween film “Scared Shrekless” featuring the voice of Mike Myers as Shrek. Cameron Diaz and Antonio Banderas reprise their roles as Princess Fiona and Puss in Boots, respectively, while Dean Edwards takes on the role of Donkey. Shrek gets in the Halloween spirit by challenging his fairytale friends to come up with scary stories for a contest. But the gang learns that they’ll have to spend the night in Lord Farquaad’s haunted castle before the winner is named. The film is rated PG and has a running time of thirty minutes.
This year’s Stonington Spooktacular participating organizations include Deer Isle Chamber of Commerce, Deer Isle-Stonington After School Program, Island Community Center, Island Heritage Trust, Island Rec Board, Opera House Arts, Opiate Free Island Partnership, Parents Are Leaders, and the Reach Performing Arts Center.
