Letter from the Director from October, 2016



Hello from High Street!


As I sit here writing my letter for the upcoming Chamber News, the office is full of boxes waiting to go to Autumn Gold venues.  Car Show trophies fill several, spoons for Chowderfest, another, and small plastic cups for the new Beer and Wine tasting yet another.  Excitement has built around Autumn’s biggest event and the calendar says its fall.

After Autumn Gold, the office will take on a different pace, as we start to look forward to the holiday seasons ahead.  Halloween with Trunk or Treat, Union Square’s Annual Dead Run at Woodlawn, our Early Bird Sale the first weekend in November and then full swing into Thanksgiving and dare I say it: Christmas.  There are plenty of events ahead for chamber members to get involved in or attend.

Some of the things I have heard from many of you, as I have traveled around, are the issues with employees and the local workforce.  Everything from lack of people to fill positions to customer service issues, to reliability.  The Chamber hopes to help you address those in our upcoming Business Conference on November 2nd.  It looks to be an information packed day, with great topics and lunch.  Take advantage of this day long opportunity to listen to experts on everything from human resources to training and millennials.

With the shopping season looming, we hope you all take the time to ‘enter’ a local store and look around for possible gift ideas.  What you spend here keeps money in our community.  I can’t stress this enough.  In global terms, spending locally keeps your community vital. This results in keeping taxes and other costs of living down.  Amazon will never give to support our local hospital, our local service organizations or community projects like a local business will.

Start off by shopping your local stores on Early Bird Saturday November 5th.  The Chamber will have shopping lists available on our webpage and in the office closer to the date. Know that you are keeping shop doors open every time you make a local purchase.

We are thrilled with the job Reach Marketing did to make it more user friendly as well as visually attractive.  Check it out at .  Make sure your listing is correct and check out the ways you can market thru us.  As if that wasn’t enough, our 2017 cover for Maine’s Best Regional Guide is truly beautiful.  This year’s book is almost sold out!  So many of our businesses requested case after case of this year’s guidebook, as well as mailing it all over the country, that we are down to the last few boxes.  Ad sales have started for the 2017 book.  Just knowing how many books everyone handed out this year, should be incentive enough for your business to be in next year’s Guide.

As always the Chamber doors are open to you!  The staff and I enjoy it when members have the time to stop in and say hello.  We are always open to ideas for programming, membership benefits or whatever you want to talk about.  Our monthly First Friday coffee hours are a great time to pop in.  Every first Friday of the month, there is a cup of coffee or tea and a sweet treat available, just stop in no rsvp required.  Meanwhile enjoy the autumn days ahead.
