High Marks for Safety and Quality at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital
Ellsworth— Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital is proud to announce that The Leapfrog Group and The Joint Commission, two national organizations, have recognized the hospital with high marks for excellent quality and safety. “We put our patients first in all that we do here,” explains John Ronan, president of Maine Coast Hospital. “Careful attention to providing the safest care possible continues to be a priority for all who work at Maine Coast and these recognitions certainly validate the hard work and commitment we make to our patients and community every day.”
Earlier this month, Maine Coast Hospital was awarded an ‘A’ from The Leapfrog Group’s Fall 2018 Hospital Safety Grade. The designation recognizes Maine Coast’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States. The Leapfrog Group is a national organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections, and other harms among patients in their care.
“Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grades recognize hospitals like Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital that focus on advancing patient safety. This ranking provides an important resource for patients, and a benchmark for hospitals, to determine how care at one hospital compares to others in a region,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an A Hospital Safety Grade deserve to be recognized for their efforts in preventing medical harm and errors.”
Developed under the guidance of a National Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital has also recently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care.
Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite survey in August. During the review, a team of Joint Commission expert surveyors evaluated compliance with hospital standards related to several areas, including emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management. Surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
“Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital is pleased to receive an “A” Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group as well as accreditation from The Joint Commission, the premier health care quality improvement and accrediting body in the nation,” shares Kristin Cyr, vice president, nursing and patient care services at Northern light Blue Hill and Northern Light Maine Coast Hospitals. “The providers, nurses, and staff at Maine Coast are all committed to providing safe, high quality care. We all take great pride in this work as well as this significant recognition.”
