Happy New Year!
As we rush headlong into 2018, we like to pause just for a moment and look back at all that we accomplished together in just the 365 short days of 2017. The Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce really worked to bring businesses a lot of timely education that is important to running a successful operation. From cyber security issues to the legal ramifications of drug testing for employees, right to our current series that started in 2017 but will continue into the new year called Taking Care of Business. Working with the Hancock County Emergency Management Agency, and our sponsor, Jones, Kuriloff, & Sargent, we are taking an in-depth look at issues that we all pray will never happen, but do. Sudden death of a partner, workplace violence, cybersecurity, and devastating natural disasters that could occur at any time. Being prepared is an essential part of running a business and the Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure that your business is protected.
We introduced a couple of new elements to old favorites in 2017. Putting a bit of an adult spin on an otherwise family affair, the Beer & Wine Tasting during Autumn Gold was a great success and a lot of fun for everyone involved. Eight vendors were on hand to display their best craft beers and locally made wines. March Dine Around got a fun addition as well. Many customers in the area were tickled pink to be able to get the first ever March Dine Around Card that they could then take to their favorite participating eateries to have a sticker placed on it to indicate that they dined at that location. By bringing back the cards to the Chamber office they were entered to win $200 in restaurant gift cards. The participation was wonderful! We are excited to be able to offer that again in 2018.
This year the Chamber wasn’t just about work. We started what we hope will be a couple of fantastic traditions in the area where everyone can be involved. Starting in November we began offering monthly Facebook contests for the public. This gives our members the opportunity to have tons of free exposure while offering up some great prizes for folks to enter these online drawing. Because everyone likes to win something, this contest, though in the early stages, has already garnered a lot of interest from social media. No one could forget “Ugly” Sweater Day on December 15th! Even we were truly amazed at the number of people around town who participated. The story was picked up by both WABI and WVII as well as STAR 97.7 and the Ellsworth American as we all did our best to make Ellsworth the little city in Maine with the most holiday spirit! Well over 100 pictures were sent in from businesses, individuals, and the schools that we proudly displayed on our Facebook page.
Executive Director, Gretchen Wilson, as well as the rest of the staff here at the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce wants to wish you all a very Happy New Year. We look forward to 2018 and the opportunity to work with you all to welcome new businesses, encourage the growth of the ones already here, and to promote our entire region.
