Castine – Join the Castine Historical Society on Tuesday, July 17th at 5:00 p.m. for a behind-the-scenes exhibit talk presented by curator Paige Lilly. The talk will focus on the Historical Society’s 2018 seasonal exhibit, “Castine’s Devoted Women: Social Change and Public Service.” Exhibit talks offer visitors a special tour of the current exhibit, highlighting historical connections and sharing intriguing stories not included in the display. Wine and cheese will be served at the beginning of the talk. The event is free of charge and no reservations are required.
During the talk, attendees will learn how preparing for the 2018 seasonal exhibit has been like a treasure hunt. The exhibit focuses on Mary W. (Molly) Dewson and Mary G. (Polly) Porter, their life together in New York and Castine, and the significant role Molly played in 1930s American politics. The storyline is based on 28 Porter-Dewson scrapbooks donated to the Castine Historical Society.
The exhibit uses their own pictures and words to explore topics important to Molly and Polly. But Molly and Polly were not the only women from Castine making an impact in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibit also highlights other Castine women devoted to politics, social reform, public service, women’s rights, and marriage equality.
The Castine Historical Society serves as a window into Castine’s extraordinary past.
