Essential Blood Collection Needs During this Challenging Time
Blood donation is essential to ensuring the health of the community. The need for blood is constant, and volunteer donors are the only source of blood for those in need. Every day patients rely on lifesaving blood transfusions include those who need surgery, treatment from car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer. Right now, people are following public health guidance to keep their families safe, and that includes contributing to a readily available supply of blood for hospitals.
We’re asking everyone who is well to donate and/or support the Red Cross Collection Process.
Blood Donor Ambassador—on-going volunteering
5 hours (approximately one shift) per month (Primarily at Fixed Donation Sites in Portland, Lewiston & Bangor)
In this role you provide excellent and enthusiastic customer service to enhance the blood donor experience. Engaging with blood donors you promote blood donation and set the stage for a long-term commitment to regular blood donations. Duties include: welcoming and greeting donors when they arrive for their donation and/or providing them with snacks and conversation after their donation – all while creating a favorable impression of the Red Cross and the blood donation process and sharing the Red Cross story. Blood Donor Screener—on-going volunteering
Variable; based on availability, average shift is 5-6 hours
The American Red Cross has implemented an additional Blood Donor Screener position in the interest of safety during the COVID2019 outbreak. Specifically, you will ensure people entering blood drives have a healthy temperature. Greet donors and model excellent customer service behaviors. Manage donor flow at temp taking station to ensure only donors passing temp screen are permitted access. Explain purpose of temperature screen to donors and ensure they understand reason for deferral if applicable. You will need to adhere to the safety protocols established such as glove changing and thermometer probe cover disposal.

Blood drives have been cancelled across the country due to coronavirus concerns. The numbers keep climbing but so far, we’ve collected more than 200,000 fewer blood donations due to the cancellation of about 7,000 Red Cross drives. Blood donations not only today and tomorrow, but throughout this pandemic.
