Downtown Shop Reopens

Ellsworth (KoT) Contemporary Functional Craft has relocated to 6 State Street in downtown Ellsworth and is open for business from Tuesday – Saturday 11 am to 6 pm.

On July 17th (KoT) owner, Cara Romano opened the doors of a new brick and mortar store in downtown Ellsworth. With husband and local builder, David LaValle, the site was renovated to create a bright, airy showroom that serves as a backdrop for the work of craft artists working in a host of mediums from around the country. The space had formerly housed the Holmes Insurance Agency.

Romano, past President of the Maine Crafts Association, launched the original gallery in 2014 representing 14 artists from Maine. Her objective was to gauge interest and support for a craft gallery in the downtown business sector of Ellsworth. For the past four years (KoT) was housed at 192 Main Street, the original Masonic Hall of the Freemasons. “We started this shop with a whole lot of passion and a thousand bucks,”  said Romano. “In seeking both a name and a logo we thought it might be a nice nod to the history of the Freemason building if we were to highlight that our space had served as the coat closet for the building. A little creative thinking resulted in our logo and name is the phonetic pronunciation of the word c-o-a-t.”

The shop’s mission highlights and supports American studio artists who are making a living from their craft. By offering a full schedule of Guest Artists Appearances, workshops, lectures and exhibitions (KoT) is slated to become a destination for crafters and craft aficionados in Downeast Maine.

(KoT) will host a “Welcome” party open to the public on August 23rd from 4 to 7 pm. More information about the event is on the website and social media platforms.
