Letter From the Director from December, 2016
Hello from High Street,
Happy Holiday Season! Wow, what happened to 2016? Soon we will be hanging up a new calendar…. but wait, there is so much to do in the next six weeks that we just can’t go there yet.
If you are like me your head is starting to swim with Thanksgiving dinner details and the infamous gift lists for Decembers holidays. Then there is the calendar of events, packed to the brim with parties, concerts, parades and events. Each year I hope to take a breath in the middle of the ‘bustle’ and just enjoy the sights and sounds and smells of this wonderful time of year.
Which reminds me…have you spruced up your business for the season? Ellsworth gets a lot of visitors this time of year as Hancock County’s Shire town. Shoppers come in to dine, stay and take in a show or event and of course shop. I often marvel at entire towns decorated for each season, how inviting they are to visit. Let’s welcome our visitors with that same spirit.
This issue of our monthly newsletter reminds you of all that is going on now, but offers opportunities to look ahead as well. Do you have your 2017 Maine’s Best Regional Guide ad confirmed yet? This very popular marketing piece goes to print in January for arrival in March. Just in time for the spring travel shows, tourist inquiries and seasonal openings. Call Kristy at our office to get into the new book.
Leadership Hancock County 2017 has announced its host site schedule of classes for the upcoming program year. This popular program has a competitive application process. 2017 applications are available on the chamber website, with a deadline of December 9th. You will not spend a better day, a month, than participating in this tremendous program. Call me if you want more details on what is one of the best opportunities for personal and career development.
What’s on the Chamber’s holiday calendar? Well, we have one of the 26 decorated Christmas Trees up at the Woodlawn Museum celebration open daily December 1-23. In partnership with the Downtown Association, we have brought nine ‘pop up’ shops to 124 Main Street in our Holiday Marketplace, open 5 weekends until Christmas. The Wreaths Across America convoy will pass thru Ellsworth on December 11, with a stop at the Maine Coast Mall for a ceremony, before moving on to Arlington National Cemetery. A Charlie Brown Christmas is live on the Grand Stage, as well as the perennial favorite the Robinson Ballet, Nutcracker. It’s a full December calendar and you can find these events and more on our new webpage calendar at www.ellsworthchamber.org
I will be shopping locally, waving to the parade participants, enjoying the window decorations, cooking, wrapping and decorating as I anxiously wait for children to return home Christmas.
So, from all of us on the Chamber Staff we wish you and yours a Merry and Bright season.
