The Criterion Presents Live Shows as Executive Director Takes Final Bow
(Bar Harbor, ME)–The 1932 Criterion will host three live performances during the last weekend of April as outgoing Executive Director Heather Martin wraps up her time at the theatre.
The Juniper String Quartet from Bangor Symphony Orchestra will perform twice on Friday, April 28. The first performance at 1 p.m. is open to all students in the district and will be followed by a Q&A. The second performance at 8 p.m. is free and open to the general public thanks to a generous sponsorship from Machias Savings Bank.
“It is a such a privilege and an honor to have this quartet from the Bangor Symphony Orchestra here at The Criterion to perform for the community and inspire the next generation,” said Director Heather Martin.
On Saturday, April 29 at 8 p.m. the high energy Bohemian Klezmer Punk band, Bella’s Bartok returns to the Criterion stage with opener The Crown Vics. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
The Bella’s Bartok line-up includes Asher Putnam on vocals, Chris “Fancy” Kerrigan on guitar, clarinet, and vocals, Dan Niederhauser on bass and vocals, Saera Kochanski on accordion and mandolin, Amory Drennan on trombone, banjo and vocals, Crisco on drums/percussion and trumpet, and Gershon Rosen on trumpet.
The group has shared the stage with musical acts such as Rubblebucket, Red Baraat, The Indigo Girls and And the Kids.
The Bella’s Bartok performance will be the last live event for Director Heather Martin.
“Part of why I am so excited to have Bella’s Bartok playing The Criterion is that they have so much in common. There’s a certain exuberance to Bella’s, like electrified glitter, that we see in the Criterion as well. There’s glamor, but with a quirky sense of humor that makes both the space and the band far more interesting than they would be otherwise,” said Martin.
To close the weekend, The Criterion will screen Labyrinth on Sunday, April 30 at 7 p.m. The screening is sponsored by Mount Desert Island Real Estate.
