The Castine Town Band playing on the Town Common
Castine- The Castine Town Band will present a concert of 19th and 20th century maritime music on Friday, July 19 at 6:00 p.m. on the Castine Town Common. In case of rain, the concert will be held at Emerson Hall on Court Street. The concert is sponsored by the Castine Historical Society and the music selection is in honor of the Historical Society’s 2019/20120 exhibit Risky Business: Square-Rigged Ships and Salted Fish.
The band, under the leadership of conductor Silas Yates, will play a rousing selection of maritime music including movie themes from Pirates of the Caribbean and Mermaid. The event will also include 19th century sea chanties. Sea chanties were songs sung to accompany various types of work on board large sailing vessels.
At 5:00 the Castine Historical Society will be open for people who wish to see the current exhibit. Risky Business is a look at Castine’s ship building and international trade during the 19th century. The exhibit features paintings, photographs, maps, documents and objects from Castine families who made their living in the maritime trade. The exhibit is free of charge.
