Cadillac Family Practice, Community Health Center Recognized for Childhood Obesity Prevention Efforts

BAR HARBOR—Two of Mount Desert Island Hospital’s health centers have received 2018 Let’s Go! Healthcare Site of Distinction awards. Both Cadillac Family Practice in Bar Harbor and the Community Health Center in Southwest Harbor achieved the distinction for their commitment to excellence in childhood obesity prevention through the nationally recognized Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 program. The program promotes evidence-based strategies to boost healthy eating and physical activity for children through the 5-2-1-0 daily formula: five servings of fruits and vegetables; two hours or less of recreational screen time; one hour or more of physical activity; and zero sugary drinks.

In the healthcare setting, the Let’s Go! program focuses on educating primary care practice teams on childhood obesity by providing materials and training on how to work with patients and their families to promote healthy eating and physical activity. In collaboration with the Let’s Go! program, the providers and office staff at both Cadillac Family Practice and the Community Health Center have demonstrated that they are prioritizing obesity prevention.

Let’s Go! recognizes healthcare sites of distinction for three key areas of participation: appropriately displaying 5-2-1-0 messaging, accurately monitoring Body Mass Index (BMI) and weight classification for all patients ages two years and older, and regularly engaging with patients in respectful conversations about healthy behaviors using the 5-2-1-0 Healthy Habits Questionnaire at well-child visits.
