Blues, Fiddle Tunes and More at Surry Arts at the Barn
Surry – Surry Arts at the Barn will feature Shades of Blue at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 24. The group consists of Juliane Gardner, lead vocalist and rhythm guitar; Chris Poulin, lead guitar/vocals/flute; and Ezra Rugg, acoustic and electric bass. The musicians have performed together since they met at the University of Maine in Augusta 18 years ago. They specialize in old-time jazz and blues.
At 7 p.m. Friday, August 25 Anatole Wieck, conductor of the University of Maine Chamber Orchestra, will play violin and viola classical pieces. Wieck has performed and taught music throughout North and South America and Europe. He is the conductor-in-residence at Ridge Music Center in Estes Park,Colorado.
A Classical “Pop-Up” Concert will be offered at 4 p.m. Sunday, August 27. Stephen Bryant, Sheldon Bisberg, Debbie Riley, Gracie Neal, and Alan Wittenberg will perform.
Brooksville-based guitarist and songwriter Derrick Semler brings blues to the Barn at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 30. Semler began his career in the 1970s playing bars and dance halls with the group Soulbenders on the West Coast. He returned to Maine in the 1980s and has released several CDs, the latest in 2015 called “It’s the Blues.”
At 7 p.m. Friday, September 1 Carl Dimow and John Clark will play jazz, blues, Brazilian tunes and more. Flutist/guitarist/composer Dimow teaches folk, blues and jazz at Colby College. Clark plays bass for the Tummlers.
The Barn will showcase Archipelago at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 2. The group performs a unique blend of original folk and jazz inspired songs as well as traditional fiddle tunes. Members are Dave Quimby, Geoff Warner, Cindy Coombs, and Frank Gotwals.
