August 2016 Letter from the Director’s Office
Hellow from High Street!
Wow, how did we get to August already? I had a friend who often referred to August, as “Fat August”, a little like “Fat Tuesday, but lasting an entire month. Seems we all get to August and realize, this is it, I need to fit in this event, party, fundraiser, hike or sail before the end of the month. Yes, it’s probably the busiest month in Maine. Tourist season at its peak, days and nights filled with activities and events. Sometimes it’s hard for us to enjoy our own area with just so much going on.
I hope you take a day, or evening, to not go far, slow down and enjoy an August event, an outdoor concert at Harbor Park, a local movie, time on the water or trails, or just an ice cream treat at one of our many local vendors. These are the memories that get us through the long dark winters when it seems there is always a lot more time than things to do with it. The chamber visitor center is full of great maps, books, schedules and ideas for you and your family to take in our area and treat yourself to some of Summer’s best days.
August also means looking ahead to Autumn Gold. Committees are busy planning for the Car Show at Home Depot and the Chowderfest on the waterfront. These as well as many other events and activities will take place the last weekend in September and I invite you to volunteer at one of these events with Chamber board members and staff. You will truly enjoy the day, whether it’s helping people aboard a boat on the Union River, checking in a classic car at the 33rd Annual Auto Show, or making sure a chef has what he needs to serve up his famous chowder. Call me at the chamber and I will find the perfect volunteer job for you during our big weekend.
Where will you find me? Lobster Rollin on the River with The Grand and the Crown Vics, taking a workshop with Schoodic Arts for All, checking out the booths at the country’s longest running Summer Antique Show at Woodlawn, watching the Woodenboat Reach Regatta, walking out to Indian Point Preserve or just sitting at an ice cream shop eating salted caramel gelato in a waffle cone! I hope I run into you too!
