Leave City Hall and follow U.S. Rte. 1
north. At mile 9 is the village of Hancock, site of a major summer symphony
concert series. At 10.2 miles the Hancock-Sullivan Bridge crosses the Taunton
River where tidal currents race in and out. At 11.6 miles is the Sullivan Harbor
Scenic Turnout with spectacular views of Frenchman Bay and the mountains of
Mount Desert Island. The village of Sullivan Harbor is at 12.2 miles. The
junction with State Rte. 186 is at 18.1 miles. Turn right and continue to Winter
Harbor, a busy fishing port where every August is held a lobster festival with
lobster boat races and much to eat. Turn left at the flagpole at 24.4 miles. At
mile 25 turn right to Schoodic Point. Frazer Point picnic area is on the right
at 26.5 miles. Here begins a one-way road. At mile 28.6 on the left is a road to
Schoodic Head where you can enjoy views of the islands of Frenchman Bay. A foot
trail leads to the top of the Head and beautiful views toward the east.
Schoodic Point with its abundant sea life and dramatic shore is at mile 30.0.
After leaving the point continue on the one-way road along the eastern side.
There are several places to pull off the road to enjoy the views, including
Blueberry Hill (31.0 miles) and Popplestone Beach (32.8 miles). In the village
of Birch Harbor turn right at the junction with Rte. 186 (mile 34). Prospect
Harbor (35.3 miles) is an important fishing port and the site of one of Maine’s
few remaining sardine canneries. At mile 41 turn right onto Rte. 1 north; right
again at mile 43 onto Chicken Mill Creek Road. The Bartlett Estate Winery, maker
of fruit wines, is at mile 43.7. Tours and a tasting room are available. After
leaving the winery, continue to Rte. 1. At 44.5 miles turn left onto Rte. 1
south and return to Ellsworth (mile 67.6). |
