A Day Tour with an
international flavor is an easy trip from Ellsworth. Take
Route 1 North. At about mile 30 you will pass through the
village of Milbridge.
At mile 36 you cross
the Narraguagus river and enter the village of
Cherryfield with its many handsome old homes.
In the Jonesboro area
are extensive fields of wild blueberries and the University
of Maine Experiment Station on
Blueberry Hill. At about mile 62 is the Shire Town of
Washington County Machias. The town is named for Bad Little
Falls on the Machias
River which can be viewed from
the highway.
A number of historic
sites or interest, such as the Burnham Tavern, are to be
found in the town.
In the village of
Whiting at mile 80 turn right onto Route 189. In about ten mile you will enter
the town of Lubec.
Take the bridge over the Narrows onto
Campobello Island. You are now in
New Brunswick, Canada.
Just beyond the
Customs station is a tourist information centre where
information about the island and the Province may be had.
Two miles further on is the entrance to the Franklin D.
Roosevelt - Campobello
International Park. An
interpretive centre is open during the summer months and
tours of the Roosevelt summer cottage are available.
The International
Park and a nearby Provincial
Park offer many opportunities
for hiking, picnicking and viewing nature. The large tidal
range in Passamaquoddy Bay and the rapid currents set up by
the ebb and flood of the tides are interesting to watch.
If you should decide
to stay overnight, the island provides restaurants and
accommodations as well as gift shops.
The return trip to
Ellsworth can be taken by several alternate routes. In
Cherryfield state route 182 will take you through scenic
hill and lake country and rejoin Route 1 in the town of
Hancock. |
