Deer Isle and Stonington

   From City Hall go to Main Street, then west across the Union River to the junction with Rte. 172. Bear left past the Old Registry Building. At the top of the hill (.5 mile) is the 1820’s Colonel Black House, open for tours from May to October. At 6.3 miles is the village of Surry at the head of Patten Bay. Continue on Rte. 172 toward Blue Hill. The Blue Hill Fairgrounds are at mile 12.1. Here each Labor Day weekend is a country fair. The village of Blue Hill and the junction with Rte. 15 are at mile 13.4. Proceed straight through the village with its historic buildings and stately homes. At mile 14.0 go straight past the junction with Rte. 175. Turn left at 18.1 miles at the junction with Rte. 176. Continue on Rte. 15. At mile 22.2 is a scenic lookout on Caterpillar Hill offering views of Penobscot Bay, Eggemoggin Reach, and many offshore islands.

   Turn right at the stop sign in Sargentville. Continue on Rte. 15. The bridge over Eggemoggin Reach is at mile 25.3. Little Deer Isle is connected with its larger namesake by a causeway at mile 26.3. The pretty village of Deer Isle (30.8 miles) boasts many handsome and historic buildings. Stonington (36.4 miles) at the south end of the island is a busy fishing port and an important granite quarrying center. From here the mail boat sails to Isle Au Haut and part of Acadia National Park. Proceed along Stonington’s main street and turn right at the Opera House. Bear left just past the Elementary School. At mile 41.6 is the village of Sunset on the western shore of the island. Turn left at mile 43.4 onto Rte. 15. After crossing the bridge over Eggemoggin Reach you will enter the village of Sargentville on Rte. 175 at mile 50.5. The Sedgwick Post Office is a landmark at mile 53.7. The village of Brooklin and the road to Naskeag Point are at mile 58.8. Continue on Rte. 175 to Blue Hill Falls at mile 67.4. The fascinating reversing falls are a response to the changing tides. As the ocean rises, water rushes into Salt Pond, and when the tide falls the water rushes out again. Turn right at the junction with Rte. 172 (mile 68.0). At 70.4 miles turn right at the junction with Rte. 15. At 71.0 miles is the center of Blue Hill again. Pass through the village on Rte. 172 and return to Ellsworth at mile 84.4.
