Scenic Bucksport, a hidden treasure

Just twenty miles from Ellsworth is the river town of Bucksport that contains many hidden treasures.

Take Route 1 South from Ellsworth into the town. At the first traffic signal go straight ahead onto Main Street. Park and explore the town on foot. There is easy access to the handsome River Walk where one can relax, have a picnic, or just enjoy the view of the Penobscot River and historic Fort Knox on the far shore.

Main Street provides a number of interesting shops, an Information Center in the Chamber of Commerce building, a historical museum, and the Alamo Theater where historic films from a large archive may be viewed. At the north end of Main Street the International Paper mill invites visitors to tour the facility during the summer months.
Check with the Information Center for days and times of the guided tours.

Before leaving the area, cross the river and visit Fort Knox. This granite redoubt was built in the 1840s to guard the river and Bangor upstream from a possible incursion by British forces. The threat never materialized and the fort never fired a shot in anger, but it stands as a reminder of the history of the area.
