Points of interest in the Machias Bay Area

Machias Falls. Located in the center of Machias, these falls were named "Machias" (Bad little falls) by the Indians.

Roque Bluffs. About 10 miles southwest of Machias is Roque Bluffs State Park, a beautiful and most unusual area, containing a lovely sand beach adjoined by a fresh-water pond. Swimming is permitted. Picnicking and changing facilities are available.

Jasper Beach. Located at Bucks Harbor, just south of Machias, this, perhaps, is the world's most unusual "beach". It is comprised almost entirely of red, brown or green jasper pebbles and rocks, tumbled and rolled smooth by the water's action. It is a rock hound's dream come true.

Burnham Tavern. Built in 1770, this charming and historical Machias building served during Revolutionary Days as a gathering place for towns people planning their actions against the British. It is open on a seasonal basis.

Fort O'Brien. Originally named Fort Gates, the site of this fort is just south of Machias on Route 92. From its location one can get a panoramic view of the area of the Machias River where the very first Naval battle of the Revolution was fought between the British schooner "Margaretta" and the victorious American sloop "Unity".

Gates House. Home of the Machiasport Historical Society, on Rt 92 in Machiasport. Restored home and schoolhouse with geneology records and history of the area.

Starting at The Machias Motor Court Inn the multi use recreation trail will lead you along the old Maine Central Railroad tracks a short distance to the east and then turn northerly entering into Marshfield along the bog of Middle River. Continuing north across the Marshfield Ridge Road (tar) into the woods trails that splits at different intersections out into the various destinations, some of those can be East Machias, Northfield along the East Machias River across the new bridge to Alexander and Calais. If you wish, rather than over the bridge, continue north and cross Route 9 up into the Grand Lake Stream area near the state trail system network.
