Lubec
No trip Downeast would be considered complete without visiting the
eastern most town in the United States, Lubec, Maine. This
rural community retains a lot of the rustic charm of a
bygone era, and Lubec’s tradition as a true fishing village
can still be appreciated in the museums as well as the
modern fleet of vessels plying their trade on the ocean.
Ninety six miles of pristine coastline await your exploration, and
the world famous lighthouses such as West Quoddy Head light,
dot the coast as you picnic and hike at the local state park
with its unique variety of fauna and flora.
Some of the best seafood around can be found here, and the
restaurants are both generous and reasonable. Other
accommodations include a large selection of motels and B and
B’s with all the charm you would expect from this historic
and untouched area.
The main attraction to this area is, of course, the rugged Atlantic
coast, and the visitor has a variety of boat tours to choose
from, including whale watching. For more information call
The Lubec Chamber of Commerce at 207-255-4402.
Campobello Island
The island that captured the heart of a president, Campobello
Island, one of the three Fundy Isles, is located in the Bay
of Fundy. A special part of the Province of New Brunswick,
this Canadian Island lies just off shore of the most eastern
town in the United States, Lubec Maine. Campobello is
accessed from the mainland by the Roosevelt Campobello
International Bridge.
Campobello has two wilderness parks, the Roosevelt-Campobello
International Park and a nine-hole golf course overlooking
the ocean, as well as overnight camping with R.V. sites.
Come and visit F.D.R.’s summer home, and also the home of a
variety of wildlife such as such as whales, seals, eagles
and ospreys. |
