Retail Activity

Ellsworth is the central business district of Hancock County. It attracts shoppers from the local community, Mount Desert Island, the Blue Hill Peninsula area, further downeast, as well as the three million tourists that pass through each year. Through shopping centers, plazas, and a vibrant downtown, a central area comprises the bulk of Ellsworth’s retail businesses. Antique stores, specialty gift stores, outlet stores and chain stores can be found throughout the city.

We are also proud of our many restaurants and cafés. Many ethnic restaurants and small locally owned cafes can be enjoyed along with numerous fast food and family restaurants. Being on the coast of Maine, seafood is especially abundant and available at most restaurants. Every taste and price range is available at the eateries in the Ellsworth area.

The Maine Coast Mall, Hancock County’s largest mall, has a large department store and a large grocery store as anchors on either side of it’s 200,000 sq. ft. facility. Restaurants, clothing stores, card and gift stores abound, as well as a two-theater cinema complex within the mall.

The Mill Mall, a retrofitted 80,000 sq. ft. textile mill, houses antique stores, a craft shop, furniture center, hardware store, children’s shop, family restaurant, appliance center and hair salons that make shopping a unique experience. Other businesses in the Mall include the University of Maine Education Center and Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Wellness Center.

The Ellsworth Shopping Center is comprised of a major grocery chain, an off-priced merchandiser, a fast food establishment and a local bank branch.

Historic Downtown Ellsworth offers a wide variety of specialty shops, service businesses and cultural opportunities. Jewelry stores, clothing stores, antique shops, restaurants and cafes, quality second hand stores, gift stores, a toy center, art galleries, and furniture stores are intermixed with banks, professional offices and real estate/insurance businesses. The unique merchandise carried by the many businesses heightens the quaint atmosphere.

The numerous shopping plazas scattered throughout the community offer everything from the ever-popular L.L. Bean Outlet store to the many unique local artisan shops. Clothing stores, a sporting goods store, bookstores and specialty shops make Ellsworth the place to do your shopping in Downeast Maine.
