Health Facilities
Hancock Countys healthcare is centered around three hospitals:
- Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in the county seat
of Ellsworth.
- Blue Hill Memorial Hospital in the town of Blue
Hill.
- Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor.
Primary care health centers are also located in:
- Ellsworth (Resort Way Medical Building)
- Gouldsboro
- Somesville
- Southwest Harbor
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital --- Ellsworth
A 64-bed acute care facility, the hospital has an active medical staff of
over 100 professionals, as well as 500 employees and 300 volunteers. All
major disciplines of medical care are offered by the medical staff, in
addition to an outstanding Breast Cancer Clinic, Osteoporosis Center, Cancer
Center, Maternity Center, Emergency Medicine Services, and Cardiac
Rehabilitation units. Diagnostics include CT, MRI Nuclear Medicine,
Ultrasound, Mammography, and Radiology. The surgical unit offers both
inpatient and outpatient surgery.
Rehabilitation Centers offer Speech, Occupational, Physical, Respiratory,
and Nutritional therapy.
The hospital is a non-profit 501(3)(c)
corporation and is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors.
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital opened in November 1953.
Mount Desert Island Hospital --- Bar Harbor
A small community hospital located near Acadia National Park, it provides
a full range of services including critical care, medical/surgical,
obstetric, pediatric, geriatric, chemotherapy, physical therapy, health
education, a breast center, diagnostic radiology, occupational health,
cardiac and pulmonary rehab and 24 hour emergency care. Being near a highly
popular national park, the hospital attracts highly qualified medical staff,
technicians and support personnel.
MDI Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). It is also accredited by the American
Association of Blood Banks, and is a member of the American and Maine
Hospital Associations. It is licensed by the Maine Department of Human
Services and certified for Medicare participation by the Federal Government.
MDI Hospital has served the surrounding community and its visitors since
1897. What began as the Bar Harbor Medical and Surgical Hospital with 10
beds, has grown to a 49 bed primary care facility with extensive out-patient
and community outreach services as well as six affiliated health centers.
